SIZE AND DESCRIPTION

Forewing 19mm, but second brood is smaller. Upperside is tawny brown with dark patterning. Male is slightly smaller than female, with angular wings. Underside forewing is mainly orange with a few dark markings, and hindwing is patterned orange, black and cream. Larva is black with white spots and short black tufts.

HABITAT AND DISTRIBUTION

Lowland meadows at up to 1,800m. Southern and central Europe, but only on Isle of Wight in Britain.

FOOD AND HABITS

Flies May–June and August–September. Larvae feed on Ribwort Plantain. Overwinters as a larva.
